If you’re about to get braces, you’re probably feeling a mix of excitement and nerves. It\u2019s totally normal to wonder what the experience will actually be like. Is it painful? Will it feel weird? Will it change how you talk or eat? There are probably many questions you\u2019ve been kicking around, but don\u2019t worry, this blog has the answers. Here\u2019s what you can expect when you first receive your brand-new braces<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Your Braces Appointment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The first step in the process is always the most nerve-wracking. The good news is, getting braces put on doesn\u2019t hurt at all. The process is more about precision than pain. Your orthodontist will clean and dry your teeth, place the brackets with a special adhesive, and then attach the archwires that do the straightening over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most likely, the worst part of the appointment is holding your mouth open. You\u2019ll be in the chair for a little while, but it\u2019ll all be worth it if you push through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The First Few Hours<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Once you leave your orthodontist\u2019s office, your mouth might feel a little strange. There will be new sensations you\u2019ve probably never felt before. For example, there will be pressure from the tightness of the wires and a slightly bulky sensation as your lips adjust to the presence of your braces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s not painful at first\u2014just new. You might even have a bit of a lisp as your cheeks and tongue try to adapt to all the hardware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your First Few Days<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As your teeth begin to move over the next couple of days, they\u2019ll likely become sore. This discomfort usually shows up four to six hours after your appointment and peaks around day two or three.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This tenderness is caused by the breakdown of bone tissue beneath your gums as your teeth are pulled into place. Throughout the process, adjustments will be the most difficult because this sensation will repeat for a couple of days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, there are plenty of strategies you can use to reduce discomfort. Over-the-counter pain medication is usually enough, but you can also use ice packs in 15-minute intervals or oral numbing gels. Eating soft foods like warm soups and fluffy bread will also help ease the transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Getting Used to the Process of Braces<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It takes about a week for your mouth to fully adjust to your brackets and wires. After that, you’ll barely notice them most of the time. Just remember that every bit of pressure means your teeth are moving exactly the way they should!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Braces are a big step toward a healthier, more confident smile. While the first few days may bring soreness or weird sensations, the discomfort doesn\u2019t last long, and the results are totally worth it. In just a short time, you\u2019ll be feeling right at home in your smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
