When you are undergoing your braces treatment, you may run into a wide range of orthodontic issues over time. Some of them aren’t necessarily urgent issues, but others need to be seen by your orthodontist right away. Regardless, having an emergency kit can help you feel more confident during them. Here’s what you should keep on hand and when you should call your provider.

What Should I Have in My Emergency Kit with Braces

There is a wide range of things you should keep in your braces survival kit, such as:

  • Orthodontic Wax: This can help cover brackets and wires that are rubbing against your cheeks.
  • Over-the-Counter Medication: If you’re feeling sore, then these can give you relief.
  • Travel Toothbrush: It’s important that you brush your teeth after eating to get rid of food debris.
  • Interdental Brushes: These reach between your wires and brackets with ease.
  • Floss Threaders: Using this can help make flossing easier for you.
  • Mini Mouthwash: This can help you rinse away debris and get rid of bacteria.
  • Salt Packets: If you need to make a saltwater rinse, then these can make it easier to do on the go.
  • Breath Fresheners: Sugar-free mints or spray can be good to have to quickly get fresh breath.

How Can I Prevent Orthodontic Emergencies?

With that being said, while an emergency kit can be helpful, you should do your best to avoid urgent situations in the first place. The best way you can do this is by adding some habits to your routine.

Starting off with your diet, you should avoid hard, crunchy, and sticky foods. You should also keep up with your oral hygiene routine, as dental problems like cavities can turn into serious issues when left untreated. Be sure to never use your teeth as tools, as well; doing so can break a wire or bracket if you aren’t careful.

When Should I Call My Orthodontist?

As was mentioned above, some orthodontic emergencies need urgent care while others can wait for a bit. A loose bracket or broken wire needs to be fixed right away. Doing so will help keep your treatment on track and avoid delays. However, any concern or worry you have is good enough to call your orthodontist. They will be able to give you more personalized advice so you feel confident handling the situation.
